HISTORY

OUR NAME
Xochipilli is the Mexica peoples’ God of creativity, open-mindedness, and happiness. He influenced the various artistic traditions and values that are still practiced to this day. Xochitl is the Nahuatl word for flower, signifying beauty, and the Mayans used this name for their goddess of flowers and love. We chose the root word XOCHI, to synthesize these meanings to represent our creative inspiration.

ORIGIN

The Mexica people left the comforts of their ancestral homeland, Aztlan (modern day southwest USA; aka "The Place of Herons"), to migrate southward into the Mexican Valley to Chicomoztoc (aka "The Seven Caves"), with a clear goal in mind -- to claim their rightful home of prophecy. We too are leaving complacency behind, to create better communication & carve out our space in the art world , leaving a legacy to show for.

OUR LOGO

Found in Aztec and Mayan art depicting speech, the Tlatoa is XOCHI’s heart, earning its place as a major component of our symbol. We decided to depict our tlatoas to be in harmony, moving in a circular motion, to emphasize our strive for elevated consciousness & better communication. The Aztec Empire's ruler was referred to as the "Tlatoani" -- he who speaks, and this is the level we want our community to live up to.

Our centerpiece is our rendering of the Mexica Third Eye, stylized to resemble the "Ollin Tonalli".
Ollin translates to movement, especially in regards to our thoughts -- meaning we are one with the ever-changing world around us, constantly observing, striving to maintain a centered, higher frequency state of mind. Tonalli was to the Nahua, the soul for the human mind (out of 3 souls in the human body). It stood for vigor & energy for growth & development with an essence able to transcend the limits of the human body. These are what birthed the XOCHI Eye. Actionable knowledge is power.

The Mexica also held jewels in high regard, in part because of their abundance in their lands, symbolizing social status, protection, and also adornment for religious & spiritual purposes. For this reason we selected colors that best signified the most popular and revered gemstones and precious metals. The center is inspired by turquoise and amethyst. The tlatoas are inspired by jade, red jasper, moonstone & mother of pearl. The tlatoa outlines are symbolic for gold, copper, and amber. The black circle symbolizes leopard opal, black onyx, and obsidian.

External cultural influences also contributed to the inception of our logo. The gems also resemble ruby, sapphire, emerald, & diamonds -- which are cross-culturally known to be gems of royalty. The formation of our logo and selection for 3 Tlatoas is also inspired by the Celtic Triskelion, the Tibetan Gankyil, the Three Gems of Buddhism, the Three Treasures of Taoism, the Japanese Mitsu Tomoe & Hojo Clan's Mitsu Uroko.
